Welcome to Dog and Pup Town’s Aussie post. I love these dogs! They have the coolest traits. Also, they are riveting to look at. Among these pictures of Australian shepherds, we have included some facts. As well as answers to some frequently asked questions about the breed.
Despite their name, these dogs were perfected in the American West. They were the go-to dog for cowboys and ranchers, because of their herding ability. Aussies were also in rodeos because they are smart. They can perform all kinds of tricks.
Australian Shepherds are the 16th most AKC registered dog in the US. However, several Aussie owners don’t register their pooch with the AKC. There is a belief that the AKC is more focused on looks and appearance standards, rather than ability. Which makes sense, considering what happened with the German Shepherds.

Aussies are some wicked-looking dogs. Their coloring is amazing, as you will see in the following pics. These canines can have blue eyes, brown eyes, green eyes, or even mismatched eyes. Their eyes are so magical, that native Americans called them Ghost eyes and considered them sacred.

Australian Shepherd Colors
The Aussie has 4 basic colors, Black, Red, Blue Merle, and Red Merle. They also have 3 different kinds of markings, white, tan points, and white and tan points. You also have to factor in that they can have no markings. If you do the math, that means there are 16 possible color and markings combos.

- Black and white, which is known as a Black Bi or Black Bicolor
- Tricolor, Black with white markings and tan points.

Do Australian Shepherds Shed?
Yes, Aussies shed. The heavy shedding usually occurs in Spring and Fall. Spring is usually the worst of it because they are getting rid of their winter coat. Since they have a medium-length coat, it’s best to brush them weekly. This will keep the tangles and mats to a minimum. You should also you a rake in addition to a top brush. Like most dogs, regular grooming keeps the fur at bay.
How Big Do Australian Shepherds Get?
It depends on your definition of big. For the most part, Aussies are between 18 and 23 inches tall. This measurement is from the ground to the shoulder.
They weigh between 40 and 65 pounds. Of course, the female is on the low end of these numbers.
How Long Do Australian Shepherds Live?
I hate discussing this issue, but it is one of the most often asked questions. Aussies can have a fairly long life. This of course depends on their care. With proper diet, exercise and hygiene they can live 12-15 years.
How Much are Australian Shepherds?
It all depends on what you plan on doing with the Aussie. If you just want an awesome pooch for a pet, they are around $700. However, even if they’re AKC registered, you will not get breeding rights for that price. As a side note, if you are considering breeding, you will have to learn a lot! If you do it wrong, you can end up with some very sick puppies.
If you want a champ bloodline, expect at least $1000. This price is probably on the low end. Some puppies have been known to sell for. If you want a working dog, which was bred for that purpose, expect to pay at least $1500.
I Want One!
It’s hard not to want one of these dogs. But be careful though, because they are smart ones. They need to challenged daily, both mentally and physically. If they ever get bored they can get destructive.
They are truly working dogs and need to be active. If you are an active person, it shouldn’t be an issue.
So do you have a favorite? I don’t. They are all so cool.

Australian Shepherd Puppy Video
I really think this Australian Shepherd is trying to herd the butterfly without hurting it. All I know if this was a Labrador Puppy the butterfly wouldn’t have been around long enough for a video to be shot.
