What is a Cockapoo?

It is a Cocker Spaniel and Poodle crossbreed.

These crossbreeds have both the mental and the physical traits of the Poodle and the Cocker.  Below, you will find some sweet Cockapoo pictures.  I think you will agree that these dogs are awesome looking.

For some reason, I’m imagining this pooch having a Scottish accent.

This mix has been around since the late 1950s.  Some consider them the first of the designer dog breeds.  However, their creation was most likely the result of two rascal dogs.  Regardless, once discovered, their popularity increased.

Cockapoo puppies are a known danger!  Be careful not to look into their eyes.  Your life will never be the same again!

While most people refer to this crossbreed by Cockapoo, some other cool names are used.

  • Cacapoo
  • Cockapoodle
  • Cocker Spaniel Poodle
  • Cocker poodle
  • Spaniel poodle mix
  • Spoodle
  • Cockadoodle
  • Cockerdoodle

I think Spoodle and Cockadoodle are pretty solid choices.

You got to love it when they smile!

Cockapoo Dogs 101

Most of these Spoodles look alike.  However, with any x-breed there are no regular traits.   You never know what the result will be.  However, you can predict a range based on the Poodle and the Cocker.

One trait could be a mixed result from both breeds.  You can also get one feature from the Cocker and another one from the Poodle.

Those eyes can drill a hole into anything!

The Building Blocks

The parents of the Cocker Spaniel Poodle mix are two pretty solid dog breeds.  Below is a brief overview of the DNA for this x-breed.  Since this x-breed has been around for awhile, you can also breed a Spoodle to another Spoodle.

The Poodle

white poodle

The Poodle is not only a popular breed, but also smart!

In the book, The Intelligence of Dogs, the Poodle is the 2nd smartest breed.  They are in the top group of dogs.  This group can learn a new order within 5 attempts.  They can also remember it 95% of the time.

Even though this breed is the poster dog for the lush life.  The Poodle started out as a hunting dog in Germany.  So, their DNA has a strong work drive.

The Cocker Spaniel

cocker spaniel

This breed is a member of the sporting group.  They were used in hunting, flushing and retrieving game.  The Cocker is also a popular breed.  In fact, they were in the number on spot before the Labrador took over.

The Cocker Spaniel can be an awesome dog, friendly and lively.  They are very smart and highly trainable.

Pictures of Cockapoo Puppies

These dogs as puppies are so cute!  Enjoy these pics, there are many different Cocakpoo puppies to enjoy.

There is a reason why these dogs are so popular.  Look how addictive that face is!

I’ve never seen a puppy attempt the splits.

Have you ever noticed that when a pooch is wet, they seem to share the wealth of water.

Cockapoo puppies learn to master the puppy stare pretty quickly.

The coloring on this pup’s coat is so cool!  The crazy color combo of these dogs is so pretty.

I don’t know if this pup’s paws are huge or it’s just a lot of hair.

What is a F1 and F2 Cockapoo?

An F1 is the result of the mating of a Poodle and a Cocker.

An F2 is the result of the mating of two F1 Cockapoos.

What is the size of a full grown Cockapoo?

How big do Cockapoos get, is a tricky question to answer.    The size of a full grown Cockapoo depends on the type of Poodle that was a used.

I think these dogs are dangerous!  How could you resist such a face!

  • The Standard Cockapoo
    • Weighs over 20 pounds
    • Over 15 inches tall at the shoulder.  They usually average 22 inches tall
  • The Miniature Cockapoo
    • Average weight is 16 pounds, but can be between 12 and 20
    • The height of the shoulder is between 10 and 15 inches
  • The Toy Cockapoo
    • Weighs less than 12 pounds
    • Is under 10 inches tall

As you can see the Cockapoo size can range from 6 to 30 pounds.

It sometime hard to actually see the size of these dogs because of all the hair.

Cockapoo Colors

If you look at the below Cockapoo pictures, then you will see many colors.

According to the American Cockapoo Club, they can have the below solid colors.  They can also have any of these colors with white marks.  A note of warning!  Spoodle colors have been known to change as they get older.

  • Black

This color can be a solid uniform black on the base coat.  There is a fading gene that some Poodles have.  If the Spoodle gets the gene, it’s possible that their coat can fade.  If this does happen the coat can turn a light gray to almost a silver color.

A black Cockapoo puppy must be the easiest to take care of.  You never need to worry about if they’re dirty.

  • White

This color is self explanatory.  The majority of the base coat has white hairs. If there is any discoloration of the hairs, then the pup might be a buff or a cream Spoodle.

How often do you think white Cockapoo puppies get thrown into the bath?  I’d be obsessed with keeping them that white.

  • Buff

Buff is best described by referring it to tan or beige.

Do these dogs love the camera or does the camera love them?

  • Cream

Cream is an off white color.

I’d always be trimming around their eyes.  If I can’t see a dog’s eyes, then I don’t know what they’re up to.  Then again, I wouldn’t have to worry about their begging face during dinner.

  • Apricot

This is a weird color description.  How many people know what an Apricot color is?  Anyway, this color ranges from an off red to a lighter shade that is close to cream.

I think it’s cool that there are some many different shades in their coat.

  • Red

Red can be used for a light shade all the way to a dark shade.

The red Cockapoo puppy has such a unique coloring!

  • Chocolate or Brown

A brown Chocolate Spoodle can have a huge variations in the shade of brown. It can be a light brown all the way to a dark brown. Also, the Poodle fading gene can come into play. If it does, the color is called a Cafe Au Lait.

This chocolate Cockapoo puppy looks right at home.

The dog can also have the following combos.

  • Parti
    • When the dog has two or more solid colors and one is white.
  • Tri-Color Parti
    • A Parti Spoodle that has tan color markings.  With the markings are over the eyes, on the ears, legs, chest and muzzle.
  • Phantom
    • If a Spoodle is black and has brown under the tail, side of face, above the eyes and on the legs.
  • Tuxedo
    • A Spoodle that is black or brown with white hair in the middle of the chest.
  • Sable
    • Sometimes a pooch is born black or brown then has a color change.  The tips lighten up to gold, red, brown, silver or tan.
  • Roan
    • When the Spoodle has single white hairs and white patches mixed with the solid color.

I feel like I just asked this dog a stupid question and they either feel sorry for me or want to smack me.

Do Cockapoos Shed?

This dog breed barley sheds.  However, they will shed their puppy hair, when the time is right.

As with other traits, their hair can also be a wide variety.  Their fur can have curls, straight hair, wavy and soft.  Cockapoo grooming should include daily brushing to minimize the mats and tangles.

It is also, recommended that they get trimmed on a regular basis.  So, the trade-off is less dog hair to pick up, but more trips to the groomer.

Are Cockapoos Hypoallergenic?

It is a belief that Poodles are allergen free. So, it is deduced that Spoodles are as well.  However, that belief is false.  No dog is 100% allergen free.  Here are a few facts on this topic.

  • Dander and not the hair produce allergens
  • Pooches are never completely hypoallergenic
  • Poodles hardly shed, and have less dander

This pooch has a natural begging face.  Would you give up your food?

How Long do Cockapoos Live?

Like most animals, exercise and diet are huge factors in life span.  Your Vet can help you make sure both items are correct for your pooch.  With all things considered the Cockapoo lifespan is 14 to 18 years.

The issue with the diet is tricky because of the two parents.  Poodles are generally slimmer dogs, while Cockers can put on weight.  You really don’t know which trait the got until they get older.  Also, Poodles are known for food allergies.  So, this trait might be passed down.

What is the average Cockapoo price?

The average Cockapoo price is between 900 and 2000 dollars.  The swing in price is mostly based on the DNA.

The price of a Poodle can be all over the place.  The price swing depends on bloodline.  Usually, they start at a 1000 dollars and then goes up from there.  The Cocker Spaniel can cost between 800-1200 dollars.

If you come across a Spoodle less than 500 dollars, be careful.  I’m not saying it’s not possible, but do your research.  Obviously, there are no AKC papers for these pups.  However, if the parents are a Cocker and a Poodle, then they should have papers.  Regardless, ask to see the parents and where the puppies are kept.

Can you really put a price on face like this?

Cockapoo Temperament

The Cockapoo is a social pooch.  They are very trainable and very smart.  These traits come straight from the Poodle.  However, like most x-breeds, results are based on both breeds.

Luckily, The American Temperament Test Society, Inc. (ATTS) has the data we need.

The Mini, Toy, and Standard Poodle scored 76.7%, 78.9% and 87.2%.  The Cocker Spaniel scored 82%.  For reference, the Labrador has an average of 92.2%

I think it’s cool how owners can shape their face based on the haircut.

Cockapoos are friendly to other dogs, kids and humans.  It takes them a little time to warm up to strangers.  They love to be the center of attention.  However, it is good to know the traits of the parent breeds.

Poodles are known to be friendly, active and fun loving.  Smaller ones can be meaner than the larger ones.

The Cocker Spaniel is trickier in this regards.  The once number one breed, caused some overbreeding to occur.  This caused the breed to some health and aggression problems.  The good breeders saw the issue and have tried to resolve the issue.

The only thing missing from this picture is a beer.
